Our Mission StatementKOLK 17: A new cultural institution for puppet theatre emerges

TheaterFigurenMuseum and Puppet Theater Lübeck are becoming KOLK 17 Puppet Theater & Museum. Here, two institutions are dedicated to the art form of puppet theater in all its facets.

KOLK 17 offers events for a diverse audience. The productions, differing in form between Puppet, figure and object theatre are based on a creative visual and artistic animation process. They examine traditions and current social issues. KOLK 17 is a versatile place of creative and cultural education that enchants its visitors in both exhibitions and performances.

KOLK 17 works transparently across cultural divides and between disciplines. The diversity of puppet theatre can be experienced through the various exhibitions and performances also at times given by international guest ensembles. It is important for us to be able to accommodate the needs of society by making ourselves accessible for all people: barrier-free, with offers especially for children and for various age groups.

KOLK 17 is a research-based cultural institution that takes to task current theories and debates in the fields of puppet theatre, the performing arts and museum research. Here, the history of objects in the collection are explored, as are new techniques for exhibitions and performances. KOLK 17 endeavours to be a platform capable of contributing to the exchange of knowledge about puppet theatre.

The People behind KOLK 17

What makes a cultural institution dedicated to the performing arts so special? It’s the people behind KOLK 17 and the multidisciplinary collaboration: theorists and puppeteers work hand in hand. Together, they succeed in bringing the magic of puppet theater to life in both theater and museum, enhancing the unique impact of this art form on society.

After its internationally mobile touring activities since 1980, KOBALT Puppet Theater relocated to the Trave in 2006. Here, KOBALT transformed the Lübeck Marionette Theater into the Lübeck Puppet Theater and connected it to the contemporary puppet theater scene. With the founding of KOLK 17 Puppet Theater & Museum, KOBALT Puppet Theater became a permanent cooperation partner. With 80 to 150 performances of its own each year and through the selection of guest stages, KOBALT Puppet Theater shapes the artistic profile of KOLK 17 as a guest performance venue and also advises KOLK 17 on craftsmanship, artistic, and scientific research matters

Sustainability

Climate protection and sustainability are the greatest challenges of our time. KOLK 17 is a place of encounter and education for all and thus bears a significant responsibility to preserve our cultural heritage and support and promote societal change.

Puppet theater is a resource-efficient art form, but KOLK 17 also seeks to actively contribute to sustainable transformation beyond this. Key pillars include mobility, ecological sustainability, and social responsibility.

Architecture of the Buildings

New spaces for puppet theatre are being created – this is the largest, most challenging new puppet theatre building constructed in Germany in recent history.  KOLK 17 Figurentheater & Museum will remain an important guest theatre complete with a new theatre hall.

Historic Kolk

Lübeck’s Kolk in the middle of the Old Town is home to a chequered history of puppet theatre. Fritz Fey Sr. opened a puppet theatre here in 1977, which entertained its audience with plays for children and adults for 30 years.
A special feature has always been the proximity to the museum: as early as 1982, the Puppet Theatre Museum was founded in the immediate vicinity with a floor space of 500 square metres as a private collector’s museum by Fritz Fey jun.

In early 2021, both institutions merged under the title KOLK 17 Puppet Theatre & Museum.
